Al Gore To Endorse Obama Tonight

The Obama campaign just sent out this email from former Vice-President Al Gore:

Dear Friend,

Make a donation A few hours from now I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama. From now through Election Day, I intend to do whatever I can to make sure he is elected President of the United States.

Over the next four years, we are going to face many difficult challenges -- including bringing our troops home from Iraq, fixing our economy, and solving the climate crisis. Barack Obama is clearly the candidate best able to solve these problems and bring change to America.

This moment and this election are too important to let pass without taking action.

That's why I am asking you to join me in showing your support by making a contribution to this campaign today:

https://donate.barackobama.com/gore

Over the past 18 months, Barack Obama has united a movement. He knows change does not come from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue or Capitol Hill. It begins when people stand up and take action.

With the help of millions of supporters like you, Barack Obama will bring the change we so desperately need in order to solve our country's most pressing problems.

If you've already contributed to this campaign, I ask that you consider making another contribution right now. If you haven't, please take the next step and own a piece of this campaign today:

https://donate.barackobama.com/gore

On the issues that matter most, Barack Obama is clearly the right choice to lead our nation.

We have a lot of work to do in the next few months to elect Barack Obama president, and it begins by making a contribution to this campaign today.

Thank you for joining me,

Al Gore

Re: Al Gore To Endorse Obama Tonight (none / 0)

Lieberman is DLC. Hell, he WAS the DLC for awhile (94-00). Dean goes against much of what DLC stands for. I remember hearing it was a slap in the face to Lieberman even then. Meanwhile, Lieberman, despite being an independent and a potential McCain running mate, still embodies most of their values.

Re: Al Gore To Endorse Obama Tonight (none / 0)

I do loath and hate the DLC and everything it stands for.

I consider it an archaic institution that will close it's doors this November.

I do hate the DLC, but I don't see that as an automatic albatross for each member.  So members joined out of the elitist fear establishment Dems always love to push.

DLC Dems and Bushdog Dems have done alot of damage not just to our party, but America's prospects.

We have alot to apologize for, we buckled to GWB taking away Habeus Corpus just to have the Supreme Court slap us in the face saying "What ARE YOU NUTS!"

Democrats are far from perfect but we are getting there.

actually, Bush I, Nixon, LBJ, JFK, Truman were centrists.  So was Ike.

Carter was not an uber-lefty(not in office, anyway), so I would state he was a centrist.

Bush II is a nut job.  Reagan gave the appearance of a centrist, but he wasn't.

You could even argue about FDR - he made some bad decisions that could be called appeasing to the center/right.

Clinton didnt win because he was "centrist", in fact, he ran his campaign as a progressive. It wasn't until Dems lost control of congress that he moved to the center for his '96 reelection campaign.

The DLC is bad for the party and bad for America. We already have one xenophobic, war-happy, corporate whoring party in America- the GOP - and that is one too many.

Re: Al Gore To Endorse Obama Tonight (none / 0)

Al Gore is not going to be VP.  Why would he go backwards in time instead of looking ahead?  He had his time and has moved on to new things.

How old would Gore be in eight years?  Still younger than John McBush!!

At least unlike Judas Richardson, (none / 0)

and John Edwards, he had the good grace to wait until the end of the primary season to do so. He's choosing the good route, of uniting, or attempting to do so, not dividing like Richardson did.

Re: At least unlike Judas Richardson, (none / 0)

Are all endorsements during the primary season graceless or even treasonous then?

I would argue that it's during the primary season that the politicians ought communicate their opinions to the voters, so that the voters can take their favourite candidates' judgments into account when voting.

Re: Al Gore To Endorse Obama Tonight (none / 0)

Are people in this thread actually complaining about a Gore-Obama speech tonight?  What would make some of you happy?

Re: Al Gore To Endorse Obama Tonight (none / 0)

Obama dropping out of the race, leaving the Senate and never being heard from again... anything less and some people around here will never be happy...

Re: Al Gore To Endorse Obama Tonight (none / 0)

Maybe I should rephrase: what exactly is the underlying source of the complaints here?  So far, I've seen complaints about a request for donations in the text of the email; complaints about the fact that this is taking place in Michigan; and complaints about Gore's association with the DLC.  Really, I have a hard time believing that these complaints are not emanating from some common source of ill-will about something.

Re: Al Gore To Endorse Obama Tonight (none / 0)

no complaints here.

Just that
a) Gore won't be Veep again.  He is in a better place now
b) is this endorsement anyway a surprise?

true dat.  However, reading some of the gimmicks to why Obama should put Gore on as Veep is amusing and helps the day go by faster.

Hey, I like the Goracle as much as anyone but I think having him as the VP pick is not even remotely likely.

Goracle - lol

I haven't heard that one before.  But he was right about a few things in his life.  The man is way too smart to be in politics.  Seriously.  I am glad he is out of 'em.

Yeah he was way too nice about Florida in particular.  Should have fought that situation much harder.  Still, all in all a good man and a fine Democrat.

Here's a crazy-ass idea! Here me out! (none / 0)

What is Al Gore agreed to be Obama's running mate, with the caveat that he would resign after the first year in Office so Obama could appoint someone else to be voted on by the Senate?

The idea being to reassure voters that Gore would be around to help Obama get his feet under him for the first year and then Gore would leave the office.

It sounds crazy, but it might actually be attractive to Gore in a way. he's not locked iht being VP for 8 years (or 4) and he would help Obama get elected as directly as possible.

Re: Here's a crazy-ass idea! Here me out! (2.00 / 1)

pandering.

and it makes Obama look weaker than if he put Hillary on the ticket.

my god - I was a HRC supporter first and now I support Obama (in a lack-luster way), BUT EVEN I can see that Obama needs to stand on his own merits (of which he has a lot of).

"would be around to help Obama get his feet under him for the first year "

Worst idea possible. Such "reassurance" would drive people away by the millions.

People need vote for Obama. Not for a second Cheney (with the face of Gore) pulling Obama's strings.

I donated.  I want to have it be known that I expect Obama to take up the mantle for evironmental concerns, and what better way to send that message than sending my contribution through Al Gore.

Might've been nice to have been earlier... (2.00 / 2)

... I know why he waited, and respect it, but Gore knew as well as anyone who was going to win this thing; it was a supreme act of respect for Hillary Clinton that he waited until it was over.

Smart to do it now, if waiting was his plan; it's been a very slow political news week; hopefully he can be the driving story on Olbermann and control a news cycle or two.

I've always been in favor of a Gore VP spot; it would unite the Democrats behind Obama quite strongly, and nobody would be concerned about whether or not he'd passed the "commander-in-chief test" because he'd already won enough votes to be president once.

Furthermore, there's very little that Repbulicans could credibly attack him on that hasn't been already seen and judged.

I realize that it probably would never happen... but Obama has to make the offer at least.

Well yeah (none / 0)

Seems like a no-brainer.  Just about everyone  credible (including the media, quite honestly) was respecting Clinton's desire to stay in the race; we were just wondering where she was going with it.

I honestly believed that it was over on February 19, but I never actually begrudged her staying in the race.  She helped the Democratic party in innumerable ways by doing so.

And in hindsight, since it ended well before the convention actually having meaningful primaries in all 50 states actually helped.

Yeah he'd be awesome but there is NOT A CHANCE Gore would want to be VP.  He has more power in his elder statesman role.

Re: Al Gore To Endorse Obama Tonight (2.00 / 2)

I kept thinking that the primary would be over when Gore endorsed somebody. Which he never did. That was probably right. But there were times when I found myself thinking, "Why can't he just flip a coin and get started with the laying on of hands already?"

No way he's going to be VP. There's nothing in it for him. Even if the job is more active than it used to be, it's still the position that Truman said was worth no more than a bucket of warm piss.

Aside from that, there are other, tactical reasons he wouldn't want to do it. Gore's tactical position is similar to that of Richard Nixon after he lost a closely-fought battle to Kennedy, largely because he'd failed to grasp the media environment and got blown out by a friendlier face. A lot of people thought he was done. Eight years later he re-emerged, still pushing the same mess, but cleaner, more telegenic, more energetic -- and he won. Gore "lost" a tight one largely because he seemed stiff and swotty, disappeared, reemerged from the wilderness a quicker and more exciting presence. I thought he was going to run this year, honestly, and he probably would have waltzed to the nomination if he had.

Anyway, apprenticing himself to a man nearly 20 years his junior just seems like a step down, and it may damange any chances he has in eight or (God forbid) four years. Besides, who wants go go down in history as "America's longest-serving #2"?

great analysis.  I agree with your post.

If Gore had run this year, I would have voted for him over Hillary without a problem.
